CONTEXT & SAMPLE SELECTION
In order to address the issues of the way in which sampling was used previously and further understand the context of the research question, research grappled with the definition of context in relation to the method of sampling. With regards to sample selection, instead of sampling from the physical site context, a shift occurred toward the democratic context of the project. Sample Selection wished to address the issues of depersonalisation and homogeneity within the urban block through the creation of an architectural familiarity. An architectural familiarity was created through analysis of the societal impact of architecture within identified examples of strong community in Ireland. The samples which were identified were: the tenement, the suburban home and the community centre.

METHOD OF MANIPULATION
Previously, Zumthor’s nine principles of atmosphere were used as a means to process samples. The focus of this research then shifted toward the principle of proximity and how it may be implemented to do the same. Proximity was selected as a device to interrogate samples due to its imbued physical scales. It was also hoped that this would allow each samples manipulation to be explicitly stated and graphically represented within the design process. This research largely focused on the proximities at which people lived and how shared communal space may be deployed to influence this. The three samples identified were analysed through the lens of proximity in order to define the social structures at play within them as well as the architecture responsible .Victor Buchli suggests that society may be understood through architectural order (Buchli, 1999). ). Society or community may also be moulded through the architecture which envelopes it. Rituals and patterns of everyday life were directed into and absorbed by the communal spaces within the building, in order to suggest how a community may live in a familiar way to that of suburban life, but within closer proximity.
