Sampling Atmosphere

CONTEXT & SAMPLE SELECTION

In the first semester of this research project the site was chosen in Bray to afford an opportunity to explore how architecture may provide a platform for a strong purposeful community in an urban setting. A small shopping centre  currently exists here in which Tesco are the main occupant. This shopping centre replaced what was once a Turkish baths. As there is a new shopping centre currently in construction adjacent to this site, there is a high probability of Tesco’s migration to the newer facility, affording an opportunity for a new development to be proposed. In this phase of research samples were selected from the historical and built context of the area with the hope that the architecture would become grounded through a sense of place. The samples identified were the Turkish baths, the marketplace and the Victorian Terrace. The marketplace and Victorian terrace still exist opposite to the site.

METHOD OF MANIPULATION

The concept of atmosphere was the first means tested to manipulate the identified samples. Akin to music production where certain effects or digital processes are used to manipulate a sample, this research investigated how Peter Zumthor’s nine principles of atmosphere detailed in ‘Atmosphere’s’ may be used in a similar way. Each of the samples identified above were drawn and examined through Zumthor’s nine principles of atmosphere. An example of some of these analytical drawings can be seen to the right
